Introduction
Engineering and technical education are the cornerstones of industrialisation and economic development. Recognising the urgent need to modernise Nigeria’s technical education system, Skill “G” Nigeria Limited, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), have successfully implemented the Phase II Intervention for Laboratory and Workshop Equipment across various polytechnics and federal colleges of education (Technical).
This initiative is a major step toward equipping Nigerian institutions with state-of-the-art Technical, Vocational, and Educational Training (TVET) resources, ensuring that students and educators gain hands-on experience with the latest technology.
The remarkable intervention presentation, which was made at the TETFund head office, was witnessed by esteemed dignitaries, including Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof. Idris Mohammed Bugaje, Executive Secretary of NBTE, Rectors and provosts from the benefiting institutions, and Skill “G” desk officers, who affirmed the company’s capabilities and commitment to driving educational advancement.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills by providing essential laboratory and workshop equipment to Nigerian public polytechnics (Federal & State). The Phase II expansion now includes Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri, ensuring even broader access to quality technical education.
Following this presentation, the team of rectors and provosts proceeded for a tour of Innov8 Hub, a non-governmental organisation founded by Skill”G” Nigeria Limited, where they witnessed first hand the remarkable work of innovation at the centre.
Addressing Key Challenges in Technical Education
Select polytechnics now feature state-of-the-art teaching laboratories and workshops, focusing on key fields such as:
- Outdated or Non-Existent Training Equipment
- Limited Training and Capacity Building for Lecturers, Technologists, and Technicians
- Inadequate Infrastructure for Practical Training
- Weak Research Structures and Limited Research Activities
Skill “G” Nigeria Limited is dedicated to solving these challenges through a comprehensive intervention strategy that aligns with global best practices in TVET.
Project Components and Implementation
The Phase II project involves several key components aimed at enhancing learning experiences and equipping institutions with modern technical tools:
1. Deployment and Installation of Advanced TVET Equipment
Specialized Teaching/Learning Laboratories and Workshops have been deployed to selected polytechnics, covering fields such as:
- Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
- 3D Printing & Modeling Engineering
2. Training & Capacity Building for Educators
To ensure the effective utilization of the newly installed equipment, Skill “G” provides hands-on training for lecturers, technologists, and technicians. Additionally, a Knowledge Exchange Program will connect Nigerian educators and students with their counterparts in Israel, fostering innovation and skill enhancement.
3. Establishment of a Maintenance Support Team
A dedicated maintenance team comprising Skill “G” engineers and experts will oversee routine equipment maintenance. Furthermore, a Knowledge Exchange Program will link Nigerian educators and students with their Israeli counterparts, promoting innovation and skill development.
Methodology: A Turnkey Approach for Sustainable Impact
Skill “G” adopts a collaborative approach, partnering with NBTE, TETFund, and institutional management to ensure seamless and effective project execution.
